The topic of the discussion was ‘Is studying abroad a thing of the past?’
Many universities are already concerned about the student enrolment this autumn, including some UK universities with regard to international students. While the virus is still out there and the various travel restrictions in place, many significant questions arise.
- Will students still want to study abroad?
- Domestically, will students be able to move to attend universities in other parts of the country?
- What is the future of student mobility?
Join us in this session as we explore how the current Covid-19 crisis will affect the demand for student mobility in the long term. The panel will answer your questions live during the session.
About the speakers
Prof. Simon Marginson - Professor of Higher Education, University of Oxford, Director of the Centre for Global Higher Education and Editor-in-Chief of Higher Education, the international journal of Higher Education research. He researches global and international higher education, higher education in East Asia, and higher education and social inequality. He also prepares reports and commentary in relation to education policy.
Alan Mackay - Deputy Vice-Principal International and Director, Edinburgh Global, University of Edinburgh. Alan provides strategic leadership on internationalisation and works with senior leaders to advance the University’s international ambition and partnership. He directs the University’s international operation and has over twenty years of experience in international higher education
Komiljon Karimov - Rector, Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT). His previous work experience includes Senior Officer positions in UN agencies such as UNESCO and UNICEF where he dealt with the development challenges in the area of Education and Healthcare. Mr. Karimov holds a PhD degree in Political Sciences and International Relations from the University of World Economy and Diplomacy in Tashkent.
Janet Ilieva - Director of Education Insight. Janet is founder and director of Education Insight, a research consultancy specialising in international higher education. Janet’s research focus is on national policies for higher education engagement, global student mobility and transnational education.
Moderator Matt Durnin - Global Head of Insights and Consultancy, British Council. Mat is specialising in the economics of higher education, he leads a team of global analysts to provide UK institutions with the data, analysis and insights required to succeed in the rapidly changing international education industry
